Then too, historians typically continue to believe not only that the socially constructed time period called Tuesday comes before the socially constructed time period called Wednesday, but also that this sequence makes a difference. Thus, while puckish literary critics trace the “influence” of twentieth-century poets on eighteenth-century poets, no historian maintains that Japan bombed Pearl Harbor in December 1941 to retaliate for the American bombing of Hiroshima in August 1945.
